  • Order was instituted by King Constantine I on 16 January 1915 to honour the memory of King George I.
  • Order was awarded to military personnel and civilians who distinguished themselves in battles for the Fatherland, for activities in administration, politics, literature, sciences and arts, in the national economy, as well as those who distinguished themselves in the field of social relations; for outstanding political services to the state, citizens of Greece abroad, whose activities contributed to the glorification of Greece.
  • Order was awarded in two divisions: civil and military.
  • Order was awarded in five classes: Grand Cross, Grand Commander, Commander, Knight's Gold Cross and Knight's Silver Cross.
