Order of Saint Charles

MCO001 Ordre de Saint-Charles

Order was instituted on 15 March 1858 by Charles III.
Order is awarded to rewards service to the State or Prince. In particulars cases, it may be granted to foreigners.
Order is awarded in five grades.
Badge is gold-edged red enamel maltese cross with gold-edged white enamel panels on each arm, with ball-tipped gold finials, with gold and red and green enamel wreath between the arms, on gold crown suspension with red and green enamel jewels; the face with a deep red enamel circular central medallion bearing the crowned cipher of Prince Charles III, founder of the Order within a white enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘PRINCEPS ET PATRIA’ (Latin = Prince and Country); the reverse with a circular central medallion bearing the gold-edged red and white enamel lozenges of the arms of the Grimaldi family, rulers of Monaco, within a white enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘DEO JUVANTE’ (Latin = With God’s help); slight wear to the red enamel of the lower tip of the left hand arm of the face, small chips to the red enamel of the right and lower arms of the reverse.
